TV pundit Chris Sutton has said that West Brom need to get their recruitment right in the summer and that Slaven Bilic must break the Baggies habit of being a yo-yo club.
Sutton and Martin Keown were making their 20/21 prediction in the Daily Mail and both said that the Baggies and Leeds would need to strengthen to consolidate in the top-flight.
“Both clubs need to get their recruitment right,” Sutton said.
“West Brom gained a reputation as a yo-yo club. Slaven Bilic has to have them break that habit but they need new recruits.”
Keown made a similar comment saying, “Bielsa has a reputation as a fine coach — and so does Bilic at West Brom — but tactics can only take you so far. You need the players, too.”
Consolidation is key
We think both Leeds and West Brom have Premier League-quality players. There are many sides who would snap up players like Matheus Pereira and Kalvin Phillips.
However, we agree that recruitment will be key this season and both clubs will be looking to emulate Sheffield United, rather than Fulham or Aston Villa.
However, we think that Sutton’s yo-yo claim is rather unfair.
West Brom spent eight years in the Premier League before getting relegated in the 17/18 season.
We made the play-offs in 18/19 and then got automatic promotion this season, mirroring Leeds United.
Admittedly, we were a bit up and down pre 2009/2010 but that was a long time ago.
Consolidation is key but the template is there for Bilic and we trust in his ability as a top-flight manager.
