'Very surprised' - Exclusive: Phillips reacts to WBA transfer report, 'no chance' of ace leaving
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has claimed there is “no chance” of West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone leaving the Hawthorns in the January window.
The Sun have reported this week that Leeds, Brighton and Spurs have all earmarked the keeper as a potential signing this month, and could only cost £7million.
Phillips has batted those claims away, admitting that he would be very surprised if he was to leave the club in general, not just this month.
Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, Phillips said, “I have to say he’s been my best player this season, he’s at the top of the saves list.
“There will be teams that need strengthening in that area that will be looking at the likes of Johnstone, if West Brom want any chance of surviving in the Premier League, there’s absolutely no chance Sam’s going to leave.
“I’d be very, very surprised if he was to leave, certainly in January, there’s no chance he’s leaving in January.”
Phillips is spot on.
If the Baggies want to stand any chance of staying up this season in the Premier League, keeping their best players, especially Johnstone will be the key behind that.
The stopper has been phenomenal this season and has stepped up hugely in-between the sticks – making the most saves in the Premier League so far.
Often when his defence has deserted him, he has come to the rescue, that save at Liverpool the highlight of the season so far.
Big Sam needs new signings, he certainly doesn’t need to be losing one of his few star players, especially to other Premier League teams.
