Sam Allardyce started off slowly at West Brom but his signings are beginning to have a positive effect on results.
There have been signs over the last few weeks that show why he has been so successful in keeping teams up in the past.
We face a huge challenge to survive, but his business in January has set us up for success rather than failure.
Mbaye Diagne has been a hugely important addition.
We lacked a focal point prior to the 29-year-old arriving – we are glad we no longer have to put up with Callum Robinson or Karlan Grant.
Diagne is a big presence up-front and is good foil for Matheus Pereira, Robert Snodgrass and even Ainsley Maitland-Niles – as his miss in the Brighton game showed.
The Senegal international has also chipped in with one assist and one goal, though he should definitely have more of the latter.
He knows that, which is good, and in a recent interview with the club he displayed a hunger to give his all for Albion.
“I like it when the games are tough. You have to fight and I like fighting to win games and score goals, ” Diagne said.
“I was really happy to score against Manchester United a few weeks ago.
“I want to show that I can score goals against any team.
“If I get chances I know I will score goals. If I score goals, I will be helping out my team which is the main thing I want to do.
“The manager believes in me and he has faith in me.”
That is exactly the type of attitude we need if we are going to stand a chance of staying up.
The striker has not just the necessary determination but also the confidence to bounce back when things do not go his way.
He will not let a bad miss or a negative result get him down – it would be useful if the entire squad held that mindset.
Fans need to hear that type of thinking in order to harbour any hope, too, as it lets us know that we are going into games believing in three points.
Everton will provide a stern test on Thursday but we should take belief from the fact they recently lost to Newcastle and Fulham.
We can go there knowing we have a good chance of getting a result if we replicate our recent displays – as well as the players to fight for every point.
