We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
West Brom will be “putting irons in the fire” and discussing transfer plans with Sam Allardyce for next season despite the future being so hazy at the moment.
Albion seem certain to get relegated from the Premier League this season with the Black Country side winning just three of their 26 matches since returning from the Championship.
Allardyce was hired on a season-and-a-half contract in December after Slaven Bilic was sacked but it remains to be seen whether he’ll still be in charge at The Hawthorns next term should the Baggies suffer relegation.
However, that won’t stop Big Sam from being involved in transfer discussions with technical director Luke Dowling, according to Phillips.
“Even though they’re in the situation they’re in and are totally focused on staying up this season, Big Sam will be in meetings with recruitment, identifying players for next season and putting irons in the fire for both scenarios,” Phillips told West Brom News.
“They will do their homework. It’s sensible, you have to do that. You can’t leave it until the end of the season.”
Allardyce’s moves in the January transfer window have so far proven a hit.
Bilic found himself at odds with the West Brom board in the summer over the protracted pursuit of Filip Krovinovic and the sale of Ahmed Hegazi but Allardyce’s additions have so far helped improve the form of the team.
Robert Snodgrass, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Mbaye Diagne and Okay Yokuslu have all become mainstays of Big Sam’s starting line-up whereas some of Bilic’s summer signings have dropped out of favour.
When West Brom beat Brighton 1-0 on Saturday, Conor Gallagher was the only summer signing who started while Maitland-Niles, Diagne and Yokuslu all started and Snodgrass was injured.
It will be interesting to see whether Allardyce stays on next season but with every precaution being made, it’s likely he’ll be heavily involved in plans at this moment in time.
In other West Brom news, Kamil Grosicki has confirmed a major update on his future at The Hawthorns.
