West Bromwich Albion keen on Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer
West Brom have identified Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer as an option to replace Okay Yokuslu, according to The Athletic.
The Celta Vigo-owned defensive midfielder is expected to leave The Hawthorns this summer despite expressing his affection for the club and his life in Birmingham to colleagues at Albion, and West Brom need to land a perfect replacement to boost their chances of securing instant promotion.
Hamer impressed with Coventry in 2020/21, featuring in 42 Championship matches and weighing in with five goals and two assists.
Albion could have an entirely new midfield when 2021/22 kicks off, and the 23-year-old could be part of that line-up.
Perfect man for the job?
Whether Hamer is perfect for the promotion challenge remains to be seen, but he impressed last term and is capable of establishing himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the division with some level of consistency.
The Brazil-born Netherlands youth international won the Eredivisie with Feyenoord in 2016-17, and that experience could come in handy should a move to West Brom work out.
The next manager would most likely have the final say, but Hamer has proven he is capable of playing for teams challenging for promotion.
While there is still work to be done on his discipline, his skillset is commendable, and the Baggies could do with them in the middle of the park.
Hamer has a keen eye for goals, and his crossing abilities, passing and ball-intercepting skills all make him suitable for the job.
West Brom need someone who can spot danger and snuff it out with power and aggression like Yokuslu, and we think the Coventry star is one of the available and affordable options.
