Kevin Phillips wants Jordan Hugill to start in West Brom clash v Preston
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips wants Jordan Hugill to start for West Brom when they take on Preston away at Deepdale on Saturday afternoon.
Hugill, 29, is yet to start and yet to score for Albion since joining on loan from Norwich last month but has impressed sections of the support with his three appearances as a substitute in the Championship.
Phillips feels the ex-Preston and West Ham striker changed the game when he came off the bench in the 0-0 draw with Derby on Tuesday night.
And Super Kev wants him in Valerien Ismael’s starting line-up this weekend as West Brom aim to end their two-match winless run.
Speaking to West Brom News, Phillips said: “Hugill gave them more of a dimension. He held it up, brought players into play instead of just trying to run in behind all the time like they have been doing.
“It remains to be seen whether he starts the game at the weekend away at Preston. They need someone on that pitch who can get those scrappy goals that can win you the game 1-0.
“I would start him.
“Ismael gave him 45 minutes and when he came on, the game changed. Whack him in, start him.
“It’s against his old side as well so he’ll be desperate to do well. I would go with him and [Grady] Diangana and then whoever on the other side.”
Hugill helped Norwich win promotion from the Championship last season with four goals in 31 appearances.
All but seven of those appearances were as a substitute so it’s definitely worth seeing whether Hugill can sort out Albion’s struggles in front of goals in recent fixtures.
