Southampton ready January bid for West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone
Southampton want to sign West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and are prepared to make their move in January, according to The Sun.
Johnstone, 28, sees his contract at The Hawthorns expire in June 2022 and thus he will be available to sign on a free transfer, something which West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur are exploring as they pencil in offers for the England international.
However, it seems that Southampton are ready to blow the Premier League duo out of the water and stump up a bid to prise him from the West Midlands in January.
West Brom, though, have made it clear that there will be a lucrative offer waiting on the table for Johnstone to stay.
The Manchester United academy graduate, meanwhile, is prepared to wait until the end of his contract before deciding his next move.
Price of promotion?
West Brom’s resolve could be severely tested in the winter transfer window.
On the one hand, they could really do with receiving a transfer fee for someone who could leave for free months later.
As an England international, he could still command a seven-digit fee with just months remaining.
However, he has already shown himself to be a key performer for Albion this season in their push for promotion.
Is it worth cashing in when he could be the difference between success and failure?
Furthermore, there’s a chance he may stay at The Hawthorns if West Brom do make an instant return to the Premier League.
