Joe Chapman: Middlesbrough infuriated West Brom with time-wasting tactics

West Brom were held to a 1-1 draw by Middlesbrough on Saturday, with Grady Diangana cancelling out Josh Coburn’s opener.

The visitors took the lead at The Hawthorns in the first-half deservedly, but the Baggies attacker opened his account for the season to spare his side’s blushes.

Boro were looking for their seventh win of the season heading into the game, but they were forced to come up with ways to prevent a third straight defeat, and they resorted to wasting time towards the end of the clash.

That did not go down well with the West Brom players and supporters, and they were infuriated.

Birmingham Live journalist Joe Chapman shared the information on his personal Twitter account.

He said: “Boro doing their best to waste time, and it’s infuriating Albion players and fans.

“Was a nice move to follow, though. Conor Townsend to Adam Reach to Jayson Molumby to Diangana to Karlan Grant, who shoots at the keeper.”

Passion

The Albion were keen to secure back-to-back Championship wins for the first time since September, but it was not meant to be as Middlesbrough held to a point.

The result would have left the hosts disappointed heading into the international break, but they clearly did not do enough.

The visitors were more than ready to frustrate their efforts by wasting time unnecessarily, and that did not go down well with those at The Hawthorns.

West Brom players and their fans should not have been surprised, though, and they should expect the opposition to always deploy the “tactics” whenever they are pleased to leave with a point.

Valerien Ismael’s side have themselves to blame for the result, with their awful defending in the first-half and failure to string passes together costing them.

Victory over Middlesbrough should not have been an issue given their quality, but they could not make it count.

Sitting six points behind second-placed Fulham after 17 games, West Brom missed a chance to close the gap, and that could prove costly going forward in their bid to secure automatic promotion.
