BBC Simon Stone reacts to Kipre and Johnstone mix-up in West Brom v Derby

West Brom gifted Derby County all three points at Pride Park today, with the hosts pouncing on a defensive mix-up to secure a hard-fought 1-0 win.

Cedric Kipre and Sam Johnstone failed to communicate, and that gave Colin Kazim-Richards a chance to put the Rams into the lead, with BBC journalist Simon Stone reacting to the moment.

The Baggies could not get themselves back into the game, and the dropped points saw them miss out on a chance to temporarily move into the top-two.

Stone said: “A completely self-inflicted wound for West Brom.

“Cedric Kipre tries to head the ball back to Sam Johnstone, who is outside his area and about two yards away.

“Johnstone’s instinctive reaction is to head the ball himself – straight to Colin Kazim-Richards, who puts it into the empty net.

“That was truly disastrous from a Baggies perspective.”

Schoolboy error

The centre-back and goalkeeper have more than enough experience to be making such a mistake, and that error proved very costly in the end.

With the race for the automatic promotion chances looking very fierce, any dropped points could come back to bite West Brom, and this is one that they could regret.

They had a chance to secure a win playing against a Derby side that fielded most of their fringe players and had not won back-to-back league games in 2021-22 prior to the clash, but they squandered the chance.

The Baggies have now managed to win just two of their last eight games, and that is not good enough if they want to be playing in the Premier League next season.

Things have to improve significantly during the second half of 2021-22 if West Brom are serious about promotion, and they will need to strengthen their squad when the January transfer window opens.

Valerien Ismael’s current squad is not good enough to earn automatic promotion, and changes must be made.
