David Prutton predicts result of West Brom clash against Cardiff City
West Brom host Cardiff City on Sunday (2 January) and will be hoping to pick up a win after the disappointing loss at Derby County last time out.
David Prutton does not see that happening, though, predicting a 1-1 draw while previewing the clash in his Sky Sports column.
Albion have struggled for consistency of recent, and failure to pick up all three points against another relegation-threatened could do their chances of remaining in the play-offs places some harm.
Prutton said: “Not for the first time this term, West Brom are stuttering. They were unbeaten in the first 10 games of the season, but have really struggled to build momentum since and have also found goals hard to come by.
“Valerien Ismael may take positives from the fact his men are not conceding too many either, but with Blackburn on a hot streak, they need to buck their ideas up.
“Cardiff are still some way from climbing further away from the bottom three, though under Steve Morison, they have looked a little more comfortable on the road than at home recently. I think they could get something from this.”
The Baggies have managed to remain in the promotion picture all season long, but they missed out on a chance to move into the top two after their last two results.
A draw and a defeat have seen them slip to fourth, and there are just three points between them and seventh-placed Queens Park Rangers – who have played a game less.
It is why The Hawthorns outfit cannot afford to draw or lose on Sunday.
Every dropped point will count at the end of 2021-22, and they need to buckle up.
Finishing in the top-two is their best chance of securing an immediate return to the Premier League, and things need to improve significantly at both ends in the second half of the campaign.
A win on Sunday will be huge, and Ismael has to bring in new additions as soon as possible in January.
The quality of the transfers West Brom make in the winter transfer window will determine where they will be playing in 2022-23, and they need to get their decisions right.
In other West Brom news, the Baggies have tabled a new contract offer to centre forward.
