Joe Chapman: Okay Yokuslu unlikely to join West Brom in January
Birmingham Live journalist Joe Chapman has suggested that he does not see Okay Yokuslu joining West Brom this month amid recent reports.
Spanish media outlet La Voz De Galicia claimed last month that the former Albion loanee, 27, is keen on making a return to The Hawthorns from Celta Vigo.
Yokuslu, a Turkey international, was one of the best players at West Brom in 2020-21, but Chapman reckons Valerien Ismael would not be particularly keen on him sealing a January transfer move.
He said during a Q and A session on the website: “I’d be doubtful over the idea that he might be at the club come February. If I was to sit here now and say to you that there could be another player to arrive at the club by the end of this month, I think that it’d be fair – but it’d be highly dependent on players leaving.
“From Albion’s perspective, they’ve got their main man in and got him in on New Year’s Day – they couldn’t have done it any earlier. They’ve executed the deal brilliantly, with the help of the owner.
“Now it’s a case of what they can do – they have to be the right players. Ismael has been so clear on this previously. They have to be able to fit in, they can’t come here and sit on the bench, or train all week and then not make the squad.
“He doesn’t want a squad of 30 players. He needs players who will go straight into the first-team, if Albion are able to go and do those deals.”
West Brom really could do with more quality additions this month, but do they need another defensive midfielder?
Yokuslu has featured in seven La Liga games in 2021-22, but only one was a start.
He started 15 of the 16 Premier League games he played for the Baggies during the second half of last term, but he could not do enough to keep the side up despite his best efforts.
He was one of the most consistent players at the club last season and was someone the fans and players quickly fell in love with.
At the moment, Ismael would love someone who can come in straight into his starting XI and help boost his side’s chances of earning promotion.
Many would argue that Yokuslu has the quality to do that, but he would need time to adapt to the Frenchman’s style of play.
West Brom already have their way and system, and the head coach will be keen to keep it that way.
Landing another striker could be of greater priority should Jordan Hugill have his loan cut short, and signing a defensive midfielder does not appear to be on the cards.
In other West Brom news, the Baggies have tabled a new contract offer to centre forward.
