Michael Owen predicts result of West Brom clash against Brighton
West Brom host Brighton on Saturday (8 January) in the third round of the FA Cup, and they will be looking to progress to the next round.
Michael Owen does not see that happening, though, tipping the Premier League side to win 2-1 at The Hawthorns in what he expects to be a fiercely-contested clash while previewing the clash in his BetVictor column.
The Baggies have not been impressive in the Championship in recent games, but they will be looking to get something out of the weekend clash.
Owen said: “West Brom are on a poor run of form and have lost their place in the automatic promotion spots in the Championship.
“Brighton are having a fantastic season and can look to add to it in the FA Cup.
“I think this will be close, but I think Brighton will edge it.”
Both teams are expected to rotate their squads, with the fringe players likely to be handed the chance to impress.
Valerien Ismael is solely concentrating on securing Premier League promotion, but he has a couple of youngsters itching to be involved in action, and Saturday’s game should give them the chance to prove what they are capable of doing.
West Brom are not favourites despite playing in front of their fans, but their chances of getting a victory cannot be completely ruled out.
Their hardcore fans will not be optimistic when it comes to winning the FA Cup, but an impressive run could do the morale of the squad a lot of good.
Brighton and West Brom have two different styles of play, and that would have a huge say on the result.
A defeat will not come as a shock for the hosts, and neither will a victory be surprising.
No one knows exactly which version of Albion would turn up, and that is why this is a tough game to call.
In other West Brom news, the Baggies have tabled a new contract offer to centre forward.
