Mark Lawrenson predicts result of West Brom FA Cup clash v Brighton
West Brom host Brighton at The Hawthorns later today in the third round of the FA Cup, and a tough clash is expected when they renew hostilities.
Mark Lawrenson is tipping the Seagulls to come out on top, predicting a 2-0 loss for Valerien Ismael’s men due to their recent form while previewing the game on the BBC website.
Albion are yet to suffer defeat at home pm the Championship, and they will be keen to keep that record intact when Graham Potters’ side come visiting.
Lawrenson said: “Brighton have a bit of a score to settle with West Brom after having a goal wrongly disallowed in bizarre circumstances when they lost 1-0 to them in the Premier League last year.
“The Baggies are unbeaten at home in the Championship this season but they have not been playing well for a few weeks now. The Seagulls are in much better form.”
West Brom are solely concentrating on securing an immediate return to the Premier League, and Ismael could opt to rest a lot of his senior players.
He did so against Arsenal in the second round of the League Cup back in August, but that resulted in a 6-0 thrashing as the Gunners taught the Baggies kids and fringe players a footballing lesson.
Brighton are no Arsenal, but they have a lot of quality and experience in their ranks, and they will stroll to victory if they field a strong side and the Frenchman names a youth side.
Beating the Seagulls will not be counted as a giant-killing or an FA Cup upset given West Brom’s history, but a win will be huge for them given where they are right now.
The fans would love to see their team have a cup run, and getting the better of Brighton cannot be ruled out.
At the end of the day, the visitors are favourites, and no one will blame the hosts if they lose.
They could do with some much-needed inspiration going forward, though, and a good and impressive result and performance today could just help with that.
In other West Brom news, the Baggies have tabled a new contract offer to centre forward.
