View: Eye-opening stat questions West Brom promotion credentials
West Brom have now dropped 12 points behind the league leaders Fulham in the Championship but that isn’t the most concerning area of the league table.
It isn’t even the defence that is the issue either, the Baggies actually have the best record in the entire division for keeping goals out of their net.
The issue is with how little they are putting the ball in the opposition’s goal compared to Fulham.
The Cottagers put another six past Birmingham City on Tuesday (18 January) taking their overall tally for the season to 70 in just 26 games!
That is more than double the 31 West Brom have scored in the same amount of fixtures but the even more alarming stat is still yet to come.
As quoted by Joe Chapman on Twitter, “Fulham have scored 19 goals since last Tuesday. (West Bromwich) Albion have scored 19 goals since August”
That is just a bewildering stat that really should not be a reality but Valerien Ismael has to face the fact that it is.
While the Baggies’ own scoring troubles are partly to do with this, it is also down to Fulham’s ludicrous form as the next best Championship side have scored 26 goals less than Marco Silva’s side.
That doesn’t excuse why West Brom have scored fewer goals in 2021-22 than 16th-placed Bristol City and only one more than 21st-placed Reading.
Ismael’s back five system has long been solid in defence but teams are more than content to take a point from games against the Baggies so he needs to do more to try and get his attack firing.
Daryl Dike could provide the answer and Ismael is not done trying to sign more attacking options in the January transfer window.
In other West Brom news, reports suggest this Baggies star still has a future at the Hawthorns.
