West Brom must sign Conor Hourihane despite Sheffield United advances

West Brom fans might be a little concerned with news regarding the Sheffield United manager’s intention to discuss Conor Hourihane’s future with him.

Football League World reported recently that Baggies boss Steve Bruce was eyeing a move for the 31-year-old in the summer, when he is likely to become a free agent.

However, as per The Star, Paul Heckingbottom is keen to have a discussion with Hourihane regarding his future at the club where he has spent the past season on loan.

The report further stated that it is not clear whether the Blades will be interested in signing the midfielder permanently.

Big decision

Hourihane will have a big decision to make in the near future. The Ireland international made 31 appearances for the Bramall Lane side this season in all competitions, scoring a goal and providing four assists in the process.

The veteran midfielder might be past his peak and it is looking highly unlikely that he will get a new deal from Villa, but his experience in the second-tier of English football might be vital for the teams gunning for promotion.

Therefore, it is pivotal for a club like Albion, who are eyeing a spot back in the Premier League, to have a player like Hourihane.

Sheffield United finished ahead of West Brom in the Championship, and were only knocked out of the play-offs on penalties by Nottingham Forest, which could play a major role in the midfielder’s decision to stay at the current club.

The Blades are likely to continue their upward trajectory next season as well. He was a first-team regular for them and that could also be attractive if the same situation is on offer again.

On the other hand, West Brom will give Hourihane an opportunity to play under a familiar face in Steve Bruce who signed him for the Villains from Barnsley at the start of 2017, so they could still be in with a chance.

In other West Brom news, another 25-year-old could have his future at the Albion on the edge of a cliff after news earlier this week.
