Carlton Palmer: West Brom interest in Nikola Vasilj nothing to do with Alex Palmer

Carlton Palmer has suggested that reported West Brom interest in St Pauli goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj will have no implications on the future of goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

Palmer, 25, penned a new four-year deal at The Hawthorns on 6 May and looks set to be a big part of the Baggies’ plans going forward.

It had been reported by Football Insider [3 June] that the Baggies are monitoring 26-year-old Bosnia international Vasilj, but Carlton Palmer insists the links won’t affect the keeper’s future.

He told Football League World on Friday [10 June]: “So this has nothing to do with Alex [Palmer].

“They’ve signed him on a new long-term contract which shows what they feel about him as a goalkeeper and about the future.”

Give him a chance

Alex Palmer endured a hard season in the 2021/22 campaign, but he needs to be given an opportunity in Steve Bruce’s first team plans.

He has previously enjoyed two superb loan spells with Plymouth Argyle and Lincoln City, where he was a vital part of the Imps side which nearly secured League One promotion in the 2020/21 season.

He is still relatively young for a goalkeeper and has bags of experience that will benefit him in the long run.

The fact he has been tied down to a long contract means he clearly has a future at The Hawthorns, but if Bruce recruits a new keeper, it is crucial that Palmer doesn’t let his development stall as a result.

Bruce would be wise to give the 25-year-old a chance in his first team plans.

It will remove one transfer dilemma for the Baggies boss and also allow him to focus his transfer budget on other more important areas of the pitch.

As reported by talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook on 9 June, Josh Griffiths could well be heading out on loan this summer which provided Palmer with little competition for the number one shirt.

This is the keeper’s chance to make a real impact on the first team.

In other West Brom news, there was a heartfelt farewell message left as the vacuum that caused this position battle was created.
