David Prutton predicts West Brom to start Championship season with draw v Middlesbrough

The 2022-23 Championship season is very nearly upon us with West Brom set to travel to the Riverside to take on Middlesbrough.

Steve Bruce’s side should boast three new signings in Jed Wallace, John Swift and Okay Yokuslu after a lacklustre 2021-22 campaign warranted big changes at The Hawthorns.

Sky Sports pundit David Prutton is expecting a high-quality game on Teesside with the Baggies taking a point back to the Midlands in a 1-1 draw.

“Now then, this could be a really good game between two sides who will be keen to challenge for promotion again,” he said.

“Middlesbrough missed out on a playoff spot by just five points after Chris Wilder’s salvage operation, while West Brom faltered in the first few months of last term to finish in a disappointing 10th – their lowest final position in over two decades.

“The pair have points to prove and I think this could be an entertaining score draw.”

Take that

Having struggled so much last season, Bruce will be keen to get off to a good start and even though it might sound pessimistic in some ways, a draw is exactly that.

Boro, under the guidance of Chris Wilder, are likely to be among the sides challenging right near the top of the division this season, battling for a place in the Premier League.

West Brom want that too, of course, but for the first game of the season, away from home, most fans would take a draw and then look to begin asserting themselves on the league in their first home game.

One thing Bruce will want to see is chances being created and goals scored having invested in two outlets of attacking genius (Swift and Wallace) throughout the summer.

46 games is a long campaign and there is no need to over-exaggerate in either direction no matter the result because the league table after one game is as irrelevant as now with no matches played.

In other West Brom news, Chris Lepkowski had some scathing comments for Albion fans after the friendly against Hertha Berlin but then deleted his message.
