Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres reveals West Brom mind games before match-winning penalty

Viktor Gyokeres scored a last-gasp penalty on Wednesday evening as Coventry City ended the five-match win streak of West Brom.

The Baggies were looking for their sixth successive Championship victory on Wednesday night but suffered a 1-0 defeat at the CBS Arena thanks to Gyokeres’ 93rd-minute penalty.

Erik Pieters conceded the foul after making a reckless challenge in the box right in front of referee Keith Stroud. After pointing to the spot, West Brom players did all they could to try and put Gyokeres off.

“The West Brom players were trying to go up against me and talk a little bit,” said Gyokeres, as quoted by Coventry Live.

“It’s part of the game, trying to go in your mind so I just tried to focus on the penalty.”

Dara O’Shea was also spotted scuffing up the penalty spot when Stroud wasn’t looking, but Gyokeres took no notice.

“I wasn’t looking,” he said. “I was just waiting for everyone to go away and then it was just me and the ball, the goalkeeper and the goal. That’s why I didn’t go as close to the penalty spot as the others.”

Setback

Wednesday’s loss was certainly a blow. The Baggies would have been within touching distance of the playoff positions had they claimed all three points.

But it’s important to take a step back and assess just how far the club have come under Carlos Corberean in the last few months.

West Brom

The Spaniard has turned the season on its head and has Albion fans dreaming of a promotion just weeks after relegation looked a looming threat.

The defeat to Coventry was tough to take after such a promising run of results, but it shows that there is still plenty of work to do with this side and it acted as a timely reminder for fans to keep their expectations in check.

Corberan is still doing a fantastic job at The Hawthorns and he has a great chance to get back to winning ways when West Brom travel to Bristol City on Boxing Day.
