Sky Sports pundit slams Carlos Corberan Huddersfield exit amid talk of West Brom move to Leeds United

Carlos Corberan left Huddersfield “really in a problem” according to Michael Brown, amid speculation he could be about to do the same to West Brom.

The Spaniard has been heavily linked to the vacant managerial role at Leeds United after the Premier League club sacked Jesse Marsch on Monday (6 February), and Brown is clear that the Baggies won’t want to let him go.

But the pundit cited the Hawthorns boss resigning from Huddersfield in the summer as unfair on the club and called it a “difficult situation” in terms of an Elland Road approach for the man who has turned the Albion season around.

The Terriers were unhappy with the timing of Corberan’s resignation on 7 July, over five weeks after losing the Championship play off final (29 May), saying in their statement: “The timing is disappointing, with our preparations for the new season already under way.”

Brown said on Sky Sports News on Tuesday (6 February, 1.42pm): “What he’d done at Huddersfield, they lost him and you’ve seen the decline. He left them last minute and left them really in a problem, Huddersfield, which I didn’t really think was fair on the football club.

“He waited, then he’s come in [at West Brom]. He’s done an unbelievable job, but they won’t want to let him go at West Brom so it will be a difficult situation whether [Leeds] can go and get him.”

Worrying?

Clearly Corberan had his own reasons for leaving Huddersfield but it will put more than a seed of doubt in the minds of Baggies fans over the chances the club are capable of keeping hold of him now.

If he left at this stage there will be major concerns that the full-scale revival he has brought about at the Hawthorns might fall apart just as quickly.

He has taken West Brom from second-bottom in the Championship to the play off places, and wiped away the apathy that had taken hold under Steve Bruce.

But if Leeds come calling his recent past suggests he is not afraid to make the decision that is best for him, which he is entitled to do but could derail the Baggies’ campaign.

He might argue that the only reason the club has a season is because of him, which is essentially true at this point, and having a familiarity with key figures at Elland Road from his previous time there might be a draw.

Having done such good work in a short space of time in the Midlands everyone at the club has to hope that he wishes to see the job through the current promotion push at least.

Just because he supposedly left Huddersfield in the lurch doesn’t mean he will do the same at West Brom, and the supporters will be hoping beyond hope he stays put until the Leeds United position is filled.

In other West Brom news, a former Albion player has made a public plea for the club to keep the manager for the supporters’ sake.
