West Brom: Carlos Corberan makes new Yann M’Vila admission ahead of Rotherham showdown

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan has admitted he doesn’t know when Yann M’Vila will be fit to start for the Baggies this season.

The French midfielder joined the ranks at The Hawthorns on a short-term deal after the winter transfer window closed but has only made three substitute appearances so far, clocking in at only 52 minutes of action.

Ahead of Wednesday’s meeting with Rotherham (10 April), Corberan has provided an update on the 33-year-old’s fitness and admitted they haven’t been able to put “normal pressure” on him because of his time out of the game.

As quoted by the Express & Star (9 April), he said: “It is difficult to give you the answer to be honest because it is difficult to know until he made the step into the pitch. He can work well and we try and arrive to the conditions for it to be safe or secure to play minutes.

“But we know M’Vila is one player who for eight or nine months was without a club and we couldn’t put normal pressure on him. It is a challenge to tell you how many minutes [Matty] Phillips can play, or M’Vila.”

Will Yann M’Vila start for West Brom and Carlos Corberan v Rotherham United?

M’Vila was brought to The Hawthorns to provide midfield cover after Jayson Molumby’s season was ended prematurely through injury and while he hasn’t played much, he has offered an extra presence on the bench.

It was always going to be a risk signing a player who had been out of club football for such an extended length of time and it is clear from the midfielder’s lack of minutes that he isn’t yet up to speed with proceedings under Corberan.

Whether or not he will be able to gain that fitness before the end of the season remains to be seen, but it feels as though he is getting closer and closer to a starting role with each week that passes at The Hawthorns.

With Josh Maja set to return from injury and Matt Phillips getting back among the playing squad in recent weeks, there will be hope around supporters that the Baggies are almost back to their best ahead of the crucial run-in.
