Carlos Corberan to make Zac Ashworth call after West Brom transfer news emerges

Carlos Corberan must hand Zac Ashworth an opportunity in the West Brom senior team next season after an impressive loan spell with Bolton Wanderers.

The 21-year-old left-back gained valuable experience with Bolton in League One last season, also suffering promotion heartbreak as the club lost to Oxford United in the play-off final at Wembley.

Having made 23 appearances in all competitions, notching three goals and three assists from an advanced full-back role, Ashworth impressed during his time at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

According to Alan Nixon [20 May], Ian Evatt is keen to acquire the young Welshman’s services on a permanent transfer following his season-long loan at the club.

While the promise of regular football for a promotion-hungry side might be an enticing prospect this summer, Corberan must ensure he keeps Ashworth at The Hawthorns as full-back cover.

While Conor Townsend is unlikely to vacate the left-back spot for the Baggies, Ashworth has proven himself to be a capable replacement ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

With four assists in 42 Championship appearances, Townsend can often be a key part of the Baggies’ attack, and the youngster has proven he has those attributes in his game already.

He even won the Sky Bet League One Goal of the Month award for January, thrashing home during a 4-1 win over Carlisle United, showcasing his talent in front of goal as well as in defence.

Zak Ashworth has been thriving out on loan at Bolton.

While Adam Reach has been the go-to substitute at left-back this season, the 31-year-old only made five Championship starts this season, which would suggest Corberan is looking for much more competition at left-back.

The youth and athleticism of Ashworth are exactly the kind of attributes that will get Townsend firing on all cylinders again while keeping the youngster at The Hawthorns for another campaign.
