West Brom set for unexpected seven-figure payment after transfer development

West Brom could net a £1million-plus windfall on Dara O’Shea once their former defender completes a move to Brentford, according to DOOD.

The Albion news source posted on X (13 August) that the Baggies will earn 20 per cent of any fee which O’Shea’s current club Burnley make by selling the defender – whom they only signed last summer.

O’Shea looks likely to move from Burnley to Brentford in the coming days, with the Clarets set to make a profit on the £7m fee they paid the Baggies for him in 2023 [The Telegraph, 13 August].

Brentford paying beyond £7m to sign O’Shea from relegated Burnley will therefore see Albion collect 20 per cent of that figure, whatever it may be, resulting in a seven-figure windfall just a year after selling the Irishman.

Dara O’Shea transfer gives West Brom unexpected financial boost

Cash is tight at The Hawthorns this summer, and thus earning a potential windfall from the transfer of one of their ex-players will certainly be a welcome piece of news for Carlos Corberan’s side.

With the Spaniard’s reshaping of his Baggies squad well underway, the news that the club had been placed under an EFL-imposed business ban has threatened to severely restrict their business [Rob Dorsett, 3 August].

Of the incomings Albion have brought in this window, only two have seen the club spend a transfer fee, with Torbjorn Heggem arriving for £525,000 [Expressen, 26 June], and Gianluca Frabotta’s fee being kept undisclosed.

However, Ousmane Diakite, Joe Wildsmith and Devante Cole have all been brought in on free transfers, while Paddy McNair and Lewis Dobbin are on loan from San Diego FC and Aston Villa respectively.

Therefore, netting an unexpected profit from O’Shea’s switch to Brentford could potentially free up funds for Corberan to add further to his squad – having previously poured water on any new transfer links [Express and Star, 12 August].

In other West Brom news, the Baggies are monitoring the progress of a 22-year-old midfielder in an obscure European League.
