Corberan explains ‘unfair decisions’ he loves to make at West Brom

Carlos Corberan loves having the dilemma of making “unfair decisions” when it comes to choosing his West Brom substitutes.

In quotes reported by the Express & Star (17 September), the Spaniard spoke glowingly about the strength in depth has in his Baggies squad.

The likes of Ousmane Diakite, Gianluca Frabotta and Mason Holgate were all unused substitutes in Sunday’s 3-0 win at Portsmouth, while Paddy McNair, Callum Styles, and Devante Cole were not even part of the matchday squad.

Corberan accepted he has “difficult” calls to make but they are dilemmas he welcomes.

He said: “I promise you it is very difficult to make decisions from the bench in terms of which players you put in because you have the temptation to put any of them (on).

“I was thinking to put Diakite in the middle because he could win second balls, I had the temptation with (Semi) Ajayi’s yellow card to put (Mason) Holgate as a centre-back too. (Gianluca) Frabotta is a player that always has helped when he has played at left-back.

“We made five subs but to find the time to put them in when the team is playing well is always a challenge, but I like this moment because the fact it is not easy to make a decision which players can play or which players can move (off) is a very positive thing.

“But my job is to make these decisions. It is good when you make unfair decisions because it means everyone is available to help the team.”

Carlos Corberan the perfect man lead the West Brom promotion push

Albion sit top of the Championship table after five games, with four wins and a draw.

Corberan has named an unchanged XI in each of their opening five matches in the league, but is reaping the benefits of a positive transfer window, which saw 11 players added to the squad.

New signings such as Holgate and Mikey Johnston have helped bolster a side that had an almighty clear-out after last season, and will come in use in the remaining 41 league games of the season.

West Brom also have the option of utility man Styles, who can play on the left or in midfield, which will be hugely beneficial for Corberan.

As the Baggies look to improve on their play-off finish last campaign, each member of the team will play their part, and it seems Corberan is relishing the challenge of keeping everyone happy.
