Karlan Grant ‘woeful’: Tony Brown furious in West Brom draw v Stoke

Karlan Grant spurned Jed Wallace’s opportunity to win the game for West Brom against Stoke on Saturday, Tony Brown has said.

Speaking on commentary for BBC Radio WM (18 January, 4:45pm), Brown slammed Grant’s “woeful” finish in the 88th minute of Albion’s 1-1 draw on Saturday, as he blazed wide from outside the box.

Grant had his fresh-legged skipper Wallace right beside him and in a better position to get a shot away at goal, and Brown argued that despite wanting to score, Grant simply had to make the pass.

He said: “I always say to you – if you’ve got a chance of a strike, have a go – but that was woeful.

“He’s got right under it it’s gone over the bar, and Jed Wallace was in a good position in that inside right slot.”

Karlan Grant miss proves costly for West Brom v Stoke

Grant certainly wasn’t hte only Albion layer to fluff his lines agains the Potters, with midfielder Jayson Molumby slammed in the first half for a “terrible” miss from just eight yards out.

However, while Molumby’s effort came with Stoke 1-0 up and plenty of time left on the clock, Grant’s rush of blood ended up being the Baggies’ penultimate opportunity, coming with just two minutes to go.

Spurning the chance to win the game 2-1 at the death and give Tony Mowbray a dream return to The Hawthorns dughout, Grant will have to pick himself up and look to get back into the goals quickly.

The 27-year-old is currently saddling the burden of being Albion’s main striker due to Josh Maja’s injury-enforced absence, and therefore it’s hardly surprising to see he has a shoot first, pass later mentality.

Grant has been one of the Baggies’ best performers so far this season, and despite missing the chance to move up to fifth in the Championship table, he’ll continue to be a key player in the promotion race.
