Portsmouth fans told to unfurl Tony Mowbray banner at West Brom
Tony Mowbray should be honoured by the travelling Portsmouth fans at West Brom on Saturday with a banner in the away end, according to Ian Darke.
TV commentator and Pompey fan Darke posted on X (22 January) to give his thoughts on a tribute to the returning Albion boss which should be made by the away section at The Hawthorns for the Championship fixture (25 January).
Mowbray has made an emotional return to management after a year out battling bowel cancer, returning to the Baggies whom he steered to the Premier League in 2008.
Darke shared: “It would be a wonderful thing if Pompey fans show their class with a banner for West Brom boss Tony Mowbray at The Hawthorns on Saturday.
“As the Middlesbrough supporters message last night said, he’s ‘won the biggest battle of all’. Great to see him back in [the] dugout.”
Mowbray back in the game as West Brom hunt promotion again
Mowbray is a classy individual who has time for anyone, and the footballing world certainly return the favour – a rare breed of figure in the sport who is universally admired.
The 61-year-old’s first contest back in the game on Tuesday evening ironically came at his hometown club Middlesbrough (21 January), with whom he created many memories as both a player and a manager.
Albion were unable to force a result on the night in what could turn out to be an important clash in the upper echelons of the Championship table, suffering an underwhelming 2-0 defeat on Teesside, and Mowbray acknowledges there is work to be done.

That includes the transfer market, during which English clubs now have 12 days to get business completed in order to strengthen their squads.
The Baggies take on away strugglers Portsmouth next and will follow that up with the long trip down to bottom side Plymouth Argyle on 1 February – six points would be hugely welcome for Mowbray and his men.
In other West Brom news, finance expert Dan Plumley makes a surprising revelation about the club’s funds after Carlos Corberan’s exit.
