West Brom staff member hailed after what was spotted v Portsmouth today

The Hawthorns’ scoreboard operator was told they deserve a medal for keeping pace with the goals as West Brom beat Portsmouth 5-1 on Saturday.

Speaking on the BBC’s Final Score (25 January, 3:56pm), reporter Ben Mundy said at half-time – with the Baggies 4-0 up and cruising – that the scoreboard had struggled to update in time.

Albion netted four times within 19 first-half minutes and their rapid rate of scoring saw the scoreboard fail to keep up before half-time, before adding a fifth early in the second half to seal a dominant victory.

Mundy said: “The person in charge of the scoreboard at The Hawthorns deserves some kind of medal at half-time because he has kept up with the score here.

“It was 0-0 for most of it on the scoreboard, they’ve only just got it right, West Brom [are] flying.”

West Brom back on course to fix outdated Hawthorns issues

Having a fully-functioning scoreboard is the requirement of any professional club worth their salt, and while The Hawthorns’ operator eventually came up trumps, the electronics clearly need some work.

Stadium investment on a significant scale is often a non-starter in the EFL given the tight purse strings which every club is forced to operate with, but promotion to the Premier League can be transformational.

The Hawthorns

That’s exactly what Baggies fans will be dreaming of again after Saturday’s five-start performance, with Tony Mowbray enjoying a dream return to The Hawthorns dugout which has been 16 years in the making.

A huge four-goal victory, with Grady Diangana coming to the fore, takes Albion up to fifth in the Championship table on goal difference, ahead of a Middlesbrough side who beat them 2-0 in midweek.

Mowbray’s bold pre-match selection calls were repaid four-fold in an electrifying first-half display, and a redeveloped Hawthorns scoreboard will be a drop in the ocean if they can continue this momentum.
