West Brom fans fume at what ‘awful’ Joe Wildsmith did v Leeds – ‘Shocker’

West Brom supporters were left furious after what Joe Wildsmith did in the 1-1 draw with Leeds United on Saturday.

The Baggies narrowly held on to their place in the Championship playoffs with a well-deserved point at Elland Road on 1 March.

Junior Firpo opened the scoring for the hosts but Darnell Furlong’s header meant that Tony Mowbray’s side did not come away with nothing.

However, the Albion could have secured victory if it wasn’t for their goalkeeper’s mistake and a horrendous miss from John Swift.

Wildsmith error leaves West Brom reeling

Wildsmith has been the Baggies starter between the sticks after Alex Palmer left for Ipswich Town on deadline day (3 February).

However, he was responsible for the opening goal of the contest after he made a horrendous misjudgment that allowed the Whites to capitalise.

The former Derby County stopper came for a cross but got nowhere near it, leaving Firpo with an open net to head into and give Daniel Farke’s side the lead.

West Brom fans call for Wildsmith axe

Supporters are calling for the 29-year-old to be dropped after his latest error against the Whites on 1 March.

Mowbray has a ready-made replacement in his squad already if he decides to drop Wildsmith after his dismal showing on Saturday at Elland Road.

Josh Griffiths was recalled from a very positive loan spell at Bristol Rovers when Palmer departed and if he is chosen to step in, he has proved his worth with the Gas in the first-half of the campaign.

In his stint in League One, the 23-year-old kept seven clean sheets in 28 matches, conceding 44 goals for the relegation strugglers, and would be capable of stepping up for Albion, who would have a much better defence in front of him.

It remains to be seen whether the England Under-21 international is handed a chance to secure a starting spot at The Hawthorns but if Wildsmith continues to make mistakes, surely it is only a matter of time.

The decision will need to be made quickly to ensure stability ahead of a huge push for a playoff place in the final weeks of the season with an eye on a return to the Premier League.
