West Brom set for ‘huge appointment’ as out-of-work manager discussed
West Brom have been on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Tony Mowbray in April.
The Baggies pulled the plug on Mowbray with two games left after their push for the playoffs collapsed under the veteran manager.
West Brom have since been on the lookout for a new manager, with QPR boss Marti Cifuentes quickly emerging as a favourite.
Things appeared to be moving fast, as QPR placed Cifuentes on gardening leave ahead of what looked like an obvious move to The Hawthorns.

Don Goodman unsure about Cifuentes at West Brom
However, in a sudden twist of events, it emerged that Cifuentes is not even on West Brom’s list of candidates, let alone being on the verge of signing for them.
Nevertheless, Don Goodman is not sure if the Spanish tactician would have been a good appointment for Albion anyway.
The former striker pointed out how QPR left much to be desired under Cifuentes this season, although the manager dug them out of a ‘massive hole’ last term.
Season | Matches | Wins | Draws | Losses | Goals | Points | Points per Match |
2023-24 | 33 | 13 | 9 | 11 | 39:35 | 48 | 1.45 |
2024-25 | 50 | 16 | 14 | 20 | 63:74 | 62 | 1.24 |
He also drew parallels between Cifuentes and Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday, but claimed that the Owls could be ‘forgiven’ for their plight.
Goodman went on to stress the need for West Brom to get their appointment right, describing it as a ‘huge’ step for them.
“I say this often when I’m answering questions about players and managers, it’s really not for me to say whether Marti Cifuentes is somebody that West Bromwich Albion should be considering”, Goodman told FLW.
“It’s one of those scenarios, isn’t it really? I always compare the parallels of Marti Cifuentes’ arrival in the Championship at QPR to Danny Rohl’s arrival at Sheffield Wednesday.
“They were both in a massive, massive hole, and the two head coaches dug their respective clubs out of it.
“But then obviously this season it’s been very, very disappointing to say the least, from Queens Park Rangers particularly.
“I think Sheffield Wednesday you could probably forgive ultimately where they finished in the Championship because of all the turmoil off the pitch.
“So, it’s a difficult one, really, but like most clubs that are searching for managers in the Championship, West Brom, it’s a huge appointment that they simply have to get right.”

James Morrison favourite for job at The Hawthorns
It now remains to be seen who Shilen Patel and Co. will turn to with the summer transfer window fast approaching.
Interim manager James Morrison has notably emerged as a surprise favourite to take the reins at The Hawthorns among the bookies.
Meanwhile, Minnesota boss Eric Ramsay has also been linked with the job at the West Midlands club.
Derek McInnes has been mentioned as a potential option, but he has agreed to join Hearts already.
