West Brom are full of doom and gloom ahead of the clash with Preston on Saturday.

West Brom's promotion chances have taken a hit after just one win in their last five matches, which has brought them back to earth after a scintillating start under Ryan Mason.

The clash at The Hawthorns is vital to the Baggies' hopes of making the top six in the division as the Deepdale outfit are one of the Championship's top sides at the moment.

West Brom could be without four players for the contest, but they should still have confidence ahead of the match.

West Brom stats against Preston make for encouraging reading

West Brom need to be wary of Preston, of course, as they have started the season in electric form, but they have reasons to be hopeful too.

For starters, Albion are unbeaten in their last five matches against the Lilywhites, winning four and drawing one, and they have scored three or more goals in three of the last four meetings.

Secondly, the Lancashire outfit have lost 15 of their last 17 away league matches against the Baggies, with just two victories, in September 1973 and January 2022.

So, Mason and Co should be encouraged that they can get a much-needed win on 18 October.

Ryan Mason cannot rely on West Brom omens vs Preston

While Baggies can feel confident due to the positive omens, they cannot rely on them to get the job done on the pitch.

The form that Paul Heckingbottom's side are in means that the recent record between the sides cannot be taken into account when the sides meet again.

The Lilywhites sit fourth in the division, having gone unbeaten in their last five matches since a 1-0 loss to Portsmouth on 30 August.

  • Preston have beaten Charlton and Derby in their unbeaten run
  • They also drew with Middlesbrough, Bristol City and Hull City
  • Heckingbottom's side have scored seven and conceded four goals in those matches

Therefore, Mason and his side cannot take comfort in their impressive previous form against the Lancashire side.

They need to be focused, professional and make sure that they pick up all three points to try and continue their promotion push.
