Madeley – West Brom likely to target striker in January window

West Brom journalist Steve Madeley has said that he thinks West Brom will recruit a striker in the January transfer window to help the push for promotion.

The Baggies have scored 21 goals in the Championship so far this season, the second-highest behind Preston, but strikers Kenneth Zohore and Charlie Austin only have three between them.

Austin got off the mark in the 4-2 win against Cardiff last time out and there’s a hope that he’ll start scoring more as his fitness comes back.

The rest of the goals have been shared around with wingers Grady Diangana and Matty Phillips getting four each.

Talking in an exclusive Q&A on The Athletic on Friday, Madeley said he didn’t think there would be much activity in the January window, but that a striker would probably be on the cards.

“There won’t be mass transfer activity in January,” Madeley said. “Jeremy Peace always used to say it was a bad time to do business and Mark Jenkins is of the same view. But I think they will try to add a couple of signings, especially a striker, to help with that push for promotion (especially if they are challenging, which it seems like they will be).”

When your two strikers are on three goals after 11 games you’d be concerned as a fan but with the Baggies wingers in such brilliant form, goals haven’t been a problem.

We’re very hopeful that Austin will start more and score more, but a striker to see the promotion push through the second half of the season would be a brilliant addition.
