These West Brom fans hail ‘unreal’ ace for ‘absolute blinder’ v Middlesbrough
Many West Brom fans have taken to social media to praise goalkeeper Sam Johnstone for his performance in the Baggies’ 1-0 win over Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon.
Albion left it late to take all three points against Boro at the Riverside, and had to wait until the 82nd minute to see Hal Robson-Kanu break the deadlock and ultimately hand them all three points.
But it was his colleague at the other end of the field who drew praise from supporters for a series of vital saves that kept things at 0-0 for the majority of the game.
The hosts had seven shots on target, and 17 in total, against the Baggies, but a resolute performance from Johnstone was enough to help his side to a win that kept them at the summit of the Championship table.
And in truth, it probably shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise to fans.
The 26-year-old stopper has averaged 3.4 saves per game in the league so far this season, as per Whoscored, and his average match rating of 6.75 makes him the joint fourth highest rated keeper in the division so far this term.
Saturday’s display was just another example of how important he is for the Baggies.
