Paul Robinson stunned West Brom were able to sign one player in summer

Ex-England goalkeeper Paul Robinson is stunned that West Brom were able to sign Matheus Pereira on loan from Sporting CP in the summer transfer window.

Pereira, 23, has been in great form since arriving at The Hawthorns, scoring three goals and supplying seven assists in 12 appearances across all competitions.

Albion signed the Brazilian attacker on a season-long loan deal with the view to a permanent switch to the Black Country in the future.

However Robinson still finds it hard to believe that Sporting were willing to loan out a player of Pereira’s quality.

“Sporting must have one heck of a squad if they can allow players of his quality to go out on loan. He’s been such a difference for West Brom, the best player on the pitch by a mile,” the former Leeds and Tottenham shot-stopper told Football Insider.

“His ability going forward, his ability to keep the ball, to run at players. As I say Sporting must have one very good squad if they can let him go out on loan.”

Pereira has not only been one of the best players at West Brom this season, but he has also been one of the best players in the Championship.

According to stats by WhoScored, Pereira ranks joint-sixth in the Championship for key passes per appearance [2.4] while the ex-Nuremberg ace also ranks joint-second for winning the most fouls per outing [2.7].

Only Charlie Austin [2.8] has averaged more shots at goal per league game than Pereira [2], which just goes to show how key to the West Brom attack the South American is.

In other West Brom news, this midfielder has been spotted on crutches after his most recent appearance.
