‘Disgrace’ – Alan Brazil delivers verdict on incident from West Brom win v Preston
talkSPORT host Alan Brazil thought the penalty decision in West Brom’s 1-0 win against Preston was a “disgrace”.
West Brom won the game 1-0 with a penalty in the 90th minute, converted cooly by Charlie Austin.
Kyle Edwards went down after a challenge from Declan Rudd in the penalty but there was a lot of debate about how much contact there was.
The Sky commentators weren’t convinced it was enough to give the penalty.
Brazil went further but seemed to get a bit confused about VAR.
Talking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show he said, “Talking of VAR that West Brom penalty was a disgrace… I thought VAR was meant to clear these things up.
“I think Leeds and West Brom are certs to go up but that was a joke, an absolute joke honestly.”
Coming back after a break Brazil tried to backtrack, saying, “Before you start I did say if they had VAR in the Championship… I’m telling you it was an absolute joke.”
Brazil finally got there. There is no VAR in the Championship but we’re not convinced that it would have been overturned if there had been.
The use of VAR in the Premier League has shown that it needs to be a clear and obvious error by the referee, with the bar set very high to overturn decisions so far.
It’s very hard to see if there was any contact last night. If there was then Edwards would have gone down given the speed he was running it.
Perhaps if Alan Brazil was at Stockley Park… Otherwise, we think the decision would have stood.
