‘Stonewall’ – Iain Dowie delivers verdict on two penalty appeals in West Brom 1-1 v Wigan
Iain Dowie has claimed that Wigan should have been awarded a penalty in the first half of their 1-1 draw against West Brom at the DW Stadium on Wednesday night.
Charlie Austin rescued a point for the Baggies in the second half after a Sam Johnstone own goal had given relegation-threatened Wigan the lead.
However the Latics should have had a chance to get on the scoresheet from the penalty spot in the first half, according to Dowie, who believes that Semi Ajayi fouled Josh Windass.
“We’ve had two big shouts for a penalty,” said Dowie on Sky Sports News on Wednesday night [08:02pm].
“The first, Jamal Lowe played a lovely little ball inside the centre-half Bartley. It looked to me like Bartley got a bit of the ball.
“The second one I don’t think Semi Ajayi does. It’s a stonewall penalty for me because Windass gets inside him, he knocks him over in the box.
“No penalty both times.”
West Brom fans will argue that after these incidents that they should have had a penalty when a high-foot took out Conor Townsend inside the Wigan area.
Albion have had to cope with plenty of dodgy refereeing decisions this season and that match against Wigan was one where, yet again, the man in the middle has had questions asked of him.
Wigan, admittedly, could have had that penalty in the first half and maybe the referee did not award one for the foul on Townsend to balance things out.
In other West Brom news, fans blasted this “lightweight” player for his first-half display at Wigan.
