‘Simple as that’ – Bilic claims rarely-seen West Brom player remains ‘important’

Chris Willock hasn’t exactly had the greatest starts to his life at West Brom. Not that many people would have noticed.

The Benfica loanee has been rarely-used in the Midlands this season and has only featured in the club’s under-23s. He has yet to breakthrough into the first team, despite being a loan player.

Many looking in from the outside would call it a pointless transfer, but not everyone at the Baggies may think the same, including Slaven Bilic.

Bilic has recently opened up on the future of Willock, claiming that he remains an important player at the Hawthorns this season.

“He’s a part of the first team,” he told the Birmingham Mail.

“Unfortunately for him, he hasn’t been involved since that Millwall game. He’s not in because the guys who are playing in those positions are in good form, and they didn’t get suspended or injured, but he’s there.

“He’s an important part of the squad, but to be fair there are some players in his position that are in front of him. They have to drop or he has to raise his level for that to change.

“It’s as simple as that.”

It seems strange to call a player who hasn’t completed a single minute in the Championship an important part of the squad. Every manager will know that he will be needed at some point in the demanding campaign though, with injuries and suspensions always around the corner.

Willock has to keep pushing to prove himself, with Bilic handing him some sort of a lifeline in the Midlands to cling on too with his latest comments.
