Luke Dowling shares update on future of Nathan Ferguson at West Brom
Luke Dowling is confident that West Brom can agree a new deal with young full-back Nathan Ferguson.
The 19-year-old has been one of the stars of the season at The Hawthorns but his contract expires in the summer and clubs across England and Europe are reportedly eyeing up a potential deal.
The Sun reported earlier this month that Tottenham, Crystal Palace, AC Milan, Marseille and Hamburg are among the teams who are interested in Ferguson, who can be approached by non-English teams on a pre-contract deal in January.
However Albion’s technical director Dowling is sure that the club can reach a new agreement with Ferguson.
“We will be looking for clarity from Nathan Ferguson and his advisor about whether or not he wants to stay with us,” Dowling wrote in his programme column, as quoted by the Birmingham Mail.
“All I can say at this stage is that I am confident we can find the terms that would make sense to Nathan at this stage of his career – and that we all believe that his pathway at Albion remains the most advantageous to him.”
West Brom have a tough decision to make in January.
Do they sell one of the club’s hottest prospects to effectively cut their losses? Or do they run the risk of potentially losing him for a minimal compensation fee in the summer?
Of course, the ideal situation would be for the Baggies to reach a new agreement with the young defender – but that is easier said that done.
West Brom may be top of the Championship and on course for promotion, but the lure of teams like Tottenham and AC Milan is bound to turn the heads of even the most loyal of young players.
In other West Brom news, the Baggies have been handed a blow over one of their contingency plans for Grady Diangana’s possible exit in January.
