BBC pundit says whether West Brom have better squad than Leeds

Ex-Leeds striker Noel Whelan has admitted that West Brom have the “best side” in the Championship after their 1-1 draw against his former club on New Years Day.

Semi Ajayi put Albion ahead early on before an unlucky own goal in the second half led to the match ending as a stalemate.

Leeds remain top of the Championship on goal difference as a result but Whelan still thinks that second-placed West Brom are the better of the two sides.

“There’s loads of height and power in their team, we (Leeds) did well just to concede the one goal,” the BBC Radio Leeds pundit told Football Insider.

“They’re a powerful side, there’s no doubt about it, I still believe they’re the best side in the league despite the second-half dominance from Leeds.

“I don’t look too far away from West Brom and Leeds at the end of the season being automatic favourites.”

It would be a shock if, come the end of the season, one of West Brom or Leeds miss out on automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Both sides have been the stand-outs in the Championship this term and from what we have seen so far, both deserve to go up.

Leeds have taken four points off West Brom in their two meetings and Slaven Bilic’s men have won just one of their last six matches.

Hopefully this wobble ends soon and the Baggies can really push on and open up an even bigger gap between themselves and third.

In other West Brom news, Steve Madeley has discussed the likelihood of Dwight Gayle returning to The Hawthorns this month.
