Report: West Brom join pursuit of Irish centre-forward
West Brom have joined Leeds in the race to sign Sheffield United’s goal-shy centre-forward David McGoldrick, according to Football Insider.
The news outlet claims that Albion want to strengthen their striker options before the end of the month and McGoldrick, 32, is someone who has emerged on the radar of Slaven Bilic and Luke Dowling.
It is understood that West Brom are so keen to sign the Republic of Ireland international that they are ready to offer a better financial package than what Leeds are willing to table.
Leeds are in need of a new striker after Eddie Nketiah was recalled from his loan by Arsenal while West Brom already have three strikers to choose from in Hal Robson-Kanu, Charlie Austin and Kenneth Zohore, who scored his first goal since August last week.
McGoldrick is not someone who has been prolific in front of goal for Sheffield United this season as the ex-Ipswich striker has failed to score in any of this 18 Premier League appearances.
However he is kind of proven in the Championship having scored 75 times in 318 second-tier outings.
Do West Brom really need McGoldrick? He’s not an improvement on what Bilic already has and could just be a waste of resources if he is signed up.
Bilic is better off sticking with what he has rather than signing the experienced Irish forward.
If someone who is better than what he has comes along and can make the step up to the Premier League next season then fair enough.
McGoldrick, though, is not that.
In other West Brom news, plenty of changes are expected for the trip to Charlton this weekend.
