£8m price-tag slapped on head of first-choice West Brom target for January – reliable journalist

West Brom will have to pay £8million if they want to re-sign Dwight Gayle from Newcastle United this month, according to Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

The reporter claimed via his personal Twitter account on Sunday that with wages on top of the transfer fee, it will be a costly transfer for anyone who is serious about landing the 29-year-old striker.

It is understood that Gayle is West Brom’s first-choice target for the January transfer window as Slaven Bilic aims to add more firepower to his striker options.

Gayle was phenomenal in front of goal for West Brom last season as he scored 24 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions during his loan spell at The Hawthorns.

It is no surprise to see that the Baggies want to re-sign their former loan star but is the striker area one that really needs improving for Bilic?

Hal Robson-Kanu, Charlie Austin and Kenneth Zohore are all capable of starting up front and between the three of them this season, they have scored 17 goals.

Zohore has scored twice in his last two outings while there are also goals coming from other areas of the squad on a consistent basis.

Are West Brom in their current rut because of a lack of a goalscorer? No. It’s mainly down to poor play in the centre of the midfield and in the defence.

Maybe a new central midfielder or full-back would be a better addition to the squad than a striker.

In other West Brom news, Albion could try to cut their losses on this £8million player at the end of the season.
