West Brom turn attention to Rangers mainstay after impressing scouts – report
West Brom have set their sights on signing Rangers centre-back Connor Goldson, according to Football Insider.
The news outlet claims that Albion would like to sign Goldson, 27, either before the current January transfer window slams shut or in the summer, when Leeds United are also said to be keen on landing him.
It is understood that Goldson has impressed West Brom’s scouts and as Slaven Bilic aims to improve his defensive options, the Rangers mainstay has emerged as an option.
Goldson has made 36 appearances in all competitions for Rangers this season, scoring four goals in the process and helping Steven Gerrard’s side launch a serious title challenge to bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic.
Rangers have the best defensive record in the Scottish Premiership having conceded just 11 goals in 19 matches and Goldson has played a major role in that.
He also impressed in the Europa League, helping the Glaswegian giants keep clean sheets in wins against Feyenoord and Porto as his side progressed to the knock-out stages.
West Brom’s defence has been a worry this season but in the current transfer window, Bilic has more pressing concerns.
Albion’s strikers are misfiring and the latest injury blow to Grady Diangana could mean that a new winger is also something on Bilic’s mind.
Goldson is a decent centre-back but the Baggies do not really need him this month.
Maybe he is one to keep an eye out for in the summer.
