Romaine Sawyers insists West Brom ace is ‘victim of his own success’

Romaine Sawyers has claimed that West Brom playmaker Matheus Pereira is a victim of his own success in the Championship.

The Baggies midfielder insisted that the Brazilian will get back to his best sooner rather than later after his torrid month came to an end with a three-match ban for an elbow on Stoke’s Joe Allen on Monday.

Slaven Bilic will be without the South American and Grady Diangana for the rest of the month – meaning he will be lacking his usual cutting edge in the final third.

Sawyers insisted that Pereira’s lack of form is down to opposing sides taking more notice of him after a brilliant start to life in the Midlands though.

“He is a victim of his own success,” he told the Birmingham Mail.

“He is now a marked man. He came to the league fresh, nobody knew what he was about,” Sawyers explained. Now everyone can see the quality he possesses. He’s a good player and he will come good again.

“You can see he is trying. I think you would be worried if he wasn’t showing the work rate or getting in the right positions but he is.”

Pereira has been the standout man for West Brom this season. The 23-year-old has already been involved in 15 goals – 10 of those being assists.

Most impressively, the playmaker has averaged 2.1 shots on goal per game, as well as 2.3 key passes [WhoScored]. Both are the most in the entire squad, outlining his importance and how big of a miss he shall be in the next three league outings.
