View: West Brom stars comments proves Bilic right to stick with 28y/o despite concerns
West Brom midfielder Romaine Sawyers hasn’t exactly been in the best run of forms in the Championship.
The Baggies returned to the top of the Championship with Saturday’s win over Luton, despite it being their first three points since the victory at Birmingham.
Sawyers has taken some criticism over that period, with the 28-year-old being accused of being way too slow and only passing from side-to-side and backwards.
The midfielder has recently commented on his attitude and desire to do well at the Hawthorns, and that is exactly why Slaven Bilic was right to stick by his main man.
“I just can’t stand losing,” he told the Express and Star.
“If we lose on a Saturday it will take me until at least Wednesday to get over it. That night I can’t sleep and the next day I’m not really approachable.
“I keep my manners when greeting people and at the training ground. But if it was down to me I’d prefer to be off and at home.
“I don’t mind speaking to the media after a defeat but I’d rather shut down.”
That is exactly the desire that the Baggies will need to get back to the Premier League, and something that every player needs to feel in order to perform to their best abilities.
Unsurprisingly, Sawyers averages the most passes per game in the entire squad with 66.2 according to WhoScored. It is in other areas that fans aren’t exactly happy with though.
For a defensive midfielder, he is nowhere near the top of the charts in terms of tackles, interceptions, and blocks – something which could have caused frustration amongst fans when the wins had slowly started to dry up.
Sawyers clearly hasn’t let any of that get to his head though, and those recent comments prove he is ready to do anything to make sure the Baggies earn promotion this season.
