View: Sealing promotion would be perfect send off for two West Brom stars
There’s not been many more distinguished servants in the proud history of West Brom than Baggies captain Chris Brunt.
The Northern Irishman has been at The Hawthorns for 13 years now and has stuck with the club through thick and thin.
Be it the Premier League or the Championship, Brunty has been there, and has continued to perform at a high level even in his twilight years.
Unfortunately, however, all good things must come to an end. In the case of Brunt and West Brom’s glorious marriage, it appears we are now in the closing stages.
The Birmingham Mail reported earlier this week that the 35-year-old is likely to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.
They also claim that Brunt’s fellow veteran midfielder Gareth Barry looks set to call time on his Baggies tenure come the summer as well.
With that said, what better way to send these two distinguished professionals off into the sunset than with a promotion campaign?
It’s all looking good so far, of course. Slaven Bilic’s side have been keeping a high pace from start to finish this term.
For Brunt, a veteran of 418 appearances and counting for the Midlands giants, that would be the sweetest ending he could possibly imagine.
The team are currently following that objective. They currently lead the second tier, a point ahead of Leeds United and four clear of Fulham, who are just outside the automatic promotion spots.
With Barry and, particularly, Brunt seemingly heading for the Hawthorns exit door, surely that gives the whole group that bit extra motivation to go and get the job done over the next few months.
There’s a lot of football to be played until that becomes a reality, of course, but if Bilic’s team can accomplish it it would be the perfect goodbye to these two stalwarts.
In other West Brom news, a club legend has been tearing into one Baggies regular for his actions.
