EFL coach confirms West Brom loanee has returned to Hawthorns, season could be over

Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has confirmed that West Brom loanee Sam Field has returned to the Hawthorns.

The midfielder has failed to make any significant progress with his knee injury at the Valley, with the outcome being his loan spell being cut short.

Bowyer confirmed that the 21-year-old’s season could be over after he was stretched off in Charlton’s defeat against Bristol City back in October.

Bowyer confirmed on Thursday that Field will join Jonathan Leko in returning to the Midlands from Charlton after picking up a serious injury this season.

“Sam Field has had to go back to West Brom,” Bowyer said at his press conference, via the Birmingham Mail.

“His knee isn’t looking good. His season might be over.”

Field was having a great impact in London with the Championship strugglers at the beginning of the campaign, making nine appearances.

The 21-year-old was a standout performer for the Addicks. Field completed 1.8 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game according to WhoScored, towards the top of the table for both categories in their squad.

It was an important season in Field’s career, with him having the potential to catch the eye of new boss Slaven Bilic – especially with the potential of Premier League football next season at the Hawthorns.

Now, his season is most likely over. Even if he returns to full fitness, it is highly unlikely that Bilic will ever pick Field over the likes of Jake Livermore and Romaine Sawyers.
