View: Average point totals could show West Brom only need eight wins for promotion

The race for promotion to the Premier League has never been a simple task, West Brom found that out the hard way last season.

The Championship swallowed up two Baggies managers and saw the Midlands club miss out in the play-offs to arch-rivals Aston Villa over two legs.

Closest rivals Leeds also missed out somehow, despite being top of the league for the majority of the season – the two clubs once again in the automatic promotion spots.

The Birmingham Mail has revealed that the average points total needed to earn promotion in the past seven seasons is 85.5.

That would mean that the Baggies will need to win eight of their remaining 13 fixtures in the second tier, sounds simple, right?

Eight wins would put Bilic’s men on 87 points, so seven wins and one draw could even be enough. With the standard of the Championship somewhat lower this season, there shouldn’t be one team to earn a massive amount of points.

It might not be as simple as one thought though. West Brom don’t have the easiest of remaining fixtures, and a lot could be determined in the next month or so.

This index suggests that the Baggies have the second toughest run-in of clubs in the playoffs. They have four of the top six still to play, and a tough trip to Bristol City is next up on Saturday.

West Brom also have to travel to Swansea, Brentford, and Sheffield Wednesday in the next month in what could be a critical period of the campaign. Just remember, eight wins could be enough.
