‘Superb’ – Tony Brown raves about Hegazi improvement after West Brom win v Preston
Tony Brown has hailed West Brom defender Ahmed Hegazi for his improved performances in his last two appearances.
Hegazi was drafted in to replace Kyle Bartley at centre-back ahead of the trip to Bristol City on Saturday and in the two games since, Albion have not conceded and picked up a maximum of six points.
In the 2-0 win against Preston at The Hawthorns on Tuesday night, Hegazi was arguably back to his best as he won every tackle, cleared every ball and even played some decent passes when the ball was on the deck.
Speaking after the match, West Brom legend Brown spoke of how Hegazi may have been trying too hard to stand out when he was on the ball before his two recent outings.
“The main thing about him is his defending is far better, at the moment, and that is what he’s in the team for,” Brown told BBC WM on Tuesday.
“Sometimes defenders try to be a little bit pretty and overdo it instead of just doing their job and laying it off to people around them.
“But he’s been superb in the last two games.”
Hegazi was one of the best players on the pitch in the routine win against Preston.
Although Alex Neil’s side put in one of the worst away team performances of the season at The Hawthorns, Hegazi ensured that they offered next to nothing in attack with a commanding display at the back.
Bartley has been a mainstay at centre-back this season alongside Semi Ajayi but with Hegazi playing as well as he has done in the last two games, it is hard to see how the ex-Swansea man can return to the side.
In other West Brom news, Kevin Phillips is thrilled by the development of this Albion youngster.
