Rondon, Nyom, Dawson & more: How players who left West Brom last summer are doing
West Brom waved goodbye to a number of players in the summer transfer window as Slaven Bilic looked to reshape the squad.
The changes that Bilic made have clearly worked, with West Brom sitting second in the Championship table, six points clear of third with nine games to play.
Unfortunately, the coronavirus-enforced suspension of the Premier League and EFL has put a halt to Albion’s promotion charge but clearly, it was the right decision to sell those players in the summer and replace them with who Bilic relies upon now.
Here, West Brom News has rounded up how players have done since leaving The Hawthorns last summer:
Craig Dawson – Watford
Dawson swapped The Hawthorns for Vicarage Road in the summer to reunite with ex-Baggies goalkeeper Ben Foster. Although the season started miserably for Watford and Dawson, Nigel Pearson’s appointment as manager has turned the club’s fortunes around. Dawson has made 20 Premier League appearances this season but has started to drop down Pearon’s pecking order with just one appearance in the club’s last five league games.
Wes Hoolahan – Newcastle Jets
Hoolahan did not have that much of a role at West Brom last season and was unsurprisingly released at the end of his contract in the summer. The 37-year-old promptly headed Down Under to join Australian A-League side Newcastle Jets. The Irish midfielder has only made four appearances since [transfermarkt].
Tyrone Mears – free agent
West Brom fans saw Mears as a bit of a joke last season when he joined the Baggies despite spending the last few years of his career in North America. The 37-year-old made 14 appearances last term for the Baggies and is yet to find a new club since being released in the summer.
Jay Rodriguez – Burnley
Rodriguez’s exit in the summer was a bit of a kick in the teeth. He scored 22 goals in 45 Championship appearances for the Baggies last season and no one has come close to replicating those numbers under the charge of Bilic. However a lot of fans were happy to see Rodriguez rejoin boyhood club Burnley, where he has since scored eight goals in 31 total appearances. One of which came against Aston Villa, albeit without using his hand this time. Rodriguez has also scored against Chelsea and Manchester United, so he’s proven to be a success since returning to Turf Moor.
Morgan Rogers – Manchester City
Rogers was one of the hottest prospects West Brom had on their books before Manchester City snapped up the teenage attacker in the summer. Unsurprisingly, he is yet to make a senior appearance for the Citizens – he managed one for Albion before leaving – and has played regularly in Under-23s football since.
Louie Barry – Barcelona/Aston Villa
Here’s one that has had a lot of people talking. Barry was, again, one of West Brom’s most highly-rated young players but as soon as Barcelona came calling in the summer, he was straight on a plane to Catalonia to seal a move. However things did not pan out well at La Masia and Barry is now back in the West Midlands with Aston Villa. West Brom are still reportedly awaiting payment from Barcelona for his transfer.
Salomon Rondon – Dalian Yifang
Rondon’s exit in the summer was inevitable due to his release clause and many would have thought Newcastle would sign the Venezuelan. However it was Rafa Benitez it snapped him up, but for Chinese Super League club Dalian Yifang. Rondon has since scored five goals in 12 outings for Dalian.
Allan Nyom – Getafe
It was pretty clear that Nyom wasn’t the best of players during his time at West Brom but since joining Getafe permanently in the summer, he’s been a different beast altogether. Nyom’s been a mainstay for Getafe, appearing 34 times in all competitions and scoring two goals in the process. His team are fifth in La Liga and have a strong chance of qualifying for the Champions League. They are also in the last 16 of the Europa League after beating Ajax in the previous round.
