John Percy reveals leading Championship clubs plotting radical plan during enforced break
Leading Championship clubs including West Brom are plotting a wage cap in order to help finances during the enforced Coronavirus break, according to the Telegraph.
John Percy revealed that a number of Championship clubs held a conference call on Friday to discuss the radical plan to help clubs cope financially.
It is suggested that players will have their wages cut down to £6,000-a-week until the Championship resumes – something which could last a couple of months.
According to the report, West Brom joined the likes of Cardiff and Fulham in introducing wages cut as high as 50% after relegation from the Premier League recently – something which could drop even more.
The short-term future of many clubs are at risk, and it seems like a small price to pay for a number of players in the coming weeks.
West Brom do have a number of high earners which could be on upwards of £35,000-a-week, and that would see their wages cut significantly.
With the EFL confirming there will be no football until at least the 30th of April, players could be on the new wage plan for more than a month.
Sustainability is key on and off the pitch, and it would be near impossible to run a football club with no income such as matchdays available.
A recent report from the Mail has suggested that a number of clubs are struggling to cope with the financial side of their club given the recent break – including Leeds, so it would be no surprise to see the Baggies also fall into that category.
This suggested wage plan would certainly help sustain the future of many clubs, not only in the Championship and it would be no surprise to see it implemented in the coming weeks.
