'I don't think anyone would have any arguments' - Exclusive: Phillips picks player of the season
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has claimed that no one would argue if Matheus Pereira was named as the West Brom player of the season.
Since joining the Baggies on loan from Sporting CP in the summer, Pereira has scored six goals and supplied 16 assists in 33 Championship appearances [transfermarkt].
The 23-year-old has, without doubt, been one of the stand out players in the Championship this season and could be in the running for the league’s award, let alone West Brom’s.
Although Phillips has also been impressed by Romaine Sawyers this season, the ex-Baggies striker cannot look past Pereira for the award.
“You could take your pick really,” said Phillips when asked by West Brom News who is player of the season is.
“Pereira stands out and Sawyers has a good season- but I think Pereira.
“The way he’s come into the Championship, which is such a tough league, to perform the way he has. His all-round contribution to the team. He’s come in and he’s performed.
“I think if the season ended now, I don’t think anyone would have any arguments with Pereira getting it.”
Luckily for West Brom, it has been widely reported that the club has the option to sign Pereira permanently from Sporting CP.
It has been thrilling to watch Pereira in the Championship so we cannot wait to see what he could do in the Premier League if the Baggies are able to seal their promotion.
And even if they don’t, Pereira might have another chance to tear up the Championship in West Brom’s famous blue and white stripes.
In other West Brom news, this is why Kenneth Zohore still has so much to prove at The Hawthorns.
