View: Cairney comments on Fulham could give West Brom boost in promotion bid

Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney has admitted that the enforced break has come at the wrong time in their bid to catch West Brom and Leeds in the Championship.

The Cottagers captain shared that his side were in the best form they had been in all season and that they were prepared to finish the campaign strongly as they always have done.

West Brom dropped to second just before the break came into play, and currently hold a six-point gap with Fulham still to play when football resumes.

Cairney claimed his side haven’t hit their full potential just yet and are confident of achieving something between now and the end of the season.

“The break came at the wrong time for us,” he told talkSPORT.

“We’re there or thereabouts I don’t think we’ve reached our potential in third in the league, I’m confident that we can achieve something but we’ll see.”

Fulham were up there in the form charts before the break, but it is hard for anyone to predict what is going to happen next, especially in the promotion race.

West Brom have a number of tricky fixtures remaining including both Fulham and Brentford, and as we know anything can happen in the Championship.

Fulham may have been improving, but their last outing in the 1-1 draw with Bristol City could have highlighted problems that need to be looked into before the restart of play.

They conceded 14 shots on goal and defended poorly, whilst struggling to transfer their pressure into goals – needing a long-range strike from Cairney himself just to earn a point at the place Baggies dismantled the home side at just weeks before.

They may be in-form but they must be better if they want to catch the likes of West Brom and Leeds whenever the season returns.
